Tomorrow (Friday, July 21) is the opening day of the Elkhart County 4-H Fair. The weather varies every year during the nine-day event, and it looks like we’re going to get the hot days out of the way at the start.
Because of tomorrow’s heat — with highs projected to be in the 90s and a heat advisory in effect from the National Weather Service — two of the key opening-day activities have been moved for the comfort and safety of participants and guests.
The 43rd Annual Cheerleading Contest, which starts at 1 p.m., has been moved to the Concord High School gymnasium at 59117 Minuteman Way, Elkhart. Since the Mishawaka Road/C.R. 20 entrance is closed for paving, participants and spectators will need to enter the school parking lot from C.R. 13 or C.R. 24. There’s no charge for the event.
Once the evening starts to cool off in the shade of the grandstands, the big events will return to the main stage at the grandstands. At 6:30 p.m. is the veterans’ program, followed by a draft horse exposition on the track at 7, the 7:30 p.m. balloon chase taking off from the infield and this year’s fair queen contest at 8 p.m.
