The Elkhart County 4-H Fair’s Green Earth Day included recycling games, a scavenger hunt, fashion shows featuring upcycled and thrify fashions and a presentation on some local wildlife.
Courtney Franke, a naturalist with the Elkhart County Parks Department, not only talked to a group of kids about the different species in “Naturalist Talk: Turtles, Frogs & Snakes Alive!” but also allowed them to touch some of the animals.
The presentation included a variety of small creatures, including salamanders, frogs and different kinds of turtles. And this wasn’t a “sit-and-listen” presentation. Kids flocked around Courtney as he spoke about the animals, his work and the work of the Elkhart County Parks Department.
The Elkhart County Parks Department also has a permanent station at the fair, near the youth agricultural area, where people can learn more about local wildlife.
