Meet The Contestants For The 2015 Senior Queen Crown

Screen Shot 2015-07-17 at 12.38.17 PMOur 2015 Elkhart County 4-H Senior Fair Queen pageant is set for 5:30 p.m. Friday, July 24, at the Grandstands.

Seven women are competing for this year’s crown as senior queen.

Here’s your chance to get to know them:

 

Becky Arnold

Becky Arnold

Family: Married to Edward Arnold, has three children and five grandchildren.

Hometown: Goshen.

Involvement: Works at her church’s Sunday school, children’s church, Vacation Bible School, AWANA Club and an international ministry that teaches Bible stories, Bible memory and missionary stories; volunteers for Ribbon of Hope Inc.; has worked as a wound-care nurse at Courtyard Healthcare Center for 39 years.

Hobbies: Spending time with her family, baking, cooking, sewing, biking, Bible study, taking in international exchange students, teaching skin care and cosmetics, mentoring colleagues and consultants.

Joan Bailey

Joan Bailey

Family: Married to Lowell Bailey, has three children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Hometown: Goshen.

Involvement: Member of Elkhart County Extension Homemakers for 23 years and served as president.

Hobbies: Crafting, counted cross stitch, traveling and church activities.

Sponsor: Elkhart County Extension Homemakers.

Joan Chalk

Joan Chalk

Family: Was married to William Chalk, has four children, 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Hometown: Goshen.

Involvement: Used to work at Kreuter Manufacturing, customer service manager at Walmart Supercenter of Goshen, refurbished dolls for the Salvation Army, helped raise funds for Riley Children’s Hospital, participated in Relay for Life for the past 12 years.

Hobbies: Crocheting, dancing, listening to music.

Marcia Cook

Marcia Cook

Family: Married to Dick Cook, has three daughters and 10 grandchildren.

Hometown: Middlebury.

Involvement: Volunteers at her church — St. Mary’s in Bristol — the Middlebury Community Historical Museum, Bristol Community Food Pantry, Middlebury Parks and Recreation Department; serves on Elkhart County Quilt Garden review committee; was a nurse at Middlebury Family Physicians for 29 years.

Hobbies: Aerobic classes, going to the gym, outdoor activities, walking, gardening, travel and water activities.

Sue Purdue

Sue Purdue

Family: Married to Doug Purdue, has two daughters and three grandchildren.

Hometown: Goshen.

Involvement: President of Goshen Sunrisers Kiwanis Club, senior investment representative at Interra Credit Union, member of the community relations and development committee at Goshen Salvation Army, serves on the foundation board of Elkhart County Purdue Club, 34-year 4-H leader, helped raise funds for Riley Children’s Hospital, was a 10-year 4-H member.

Hobbies: Traveling, volunteering, spending time with family and friends.

Ellen Turnock

Ellen Turnock

Family: Married to Richard Turnock, has four children and eight grandchildren.

Hometown: Elkhart.

Involvement: Took a pilgrimage to Europe and Kazakhstan to work beside her daughter with orphans, took clothes and toys to Mayan people in Mexico, was a wedding coordinator at her church, worked at Miles Laboratories and Bayer AG, 1st Source Bank and McGladrey LLP.

Hobbies: Quilting, reading, cake decorating, crafts, traveling, spending time with family, trying new dishes in the kitchen.

Linda Tunks

Linda Tunks

Family: Married to John Tunks for 46 years, has one daughter, two grandchildren.

Hometown: Elkhart.

Involvement: Program director at CET International, officer and board member for Second Chance Small Dog Rescue, officer of a local bowling league, volunteer with Word of Life Teens Involved, board member and officer of Elkhart Sister Cities, previous Junior League bowling coach, Brownie Leader, Girl Scout Leader, 4-H Project Leader, ADEC volunteer, church youth group leader, Sunday school teacher.

Hobbies: Bowling, scrapbooking, animals, reading, volunteering, events with international exchange students, activities with family and friends and participating in grandchildren’s activities.

  1. I worked with Joan Chalk for over 20 years. She became known by the name “Momma Joan” by everyone that was fortunate enough to come in contact with her caring heart. She eventually developed a scrapbook of all of her kids that she has had the opportunity to watch after. Many bring their kids back in to see her and some of these second generations have even worked with her and become her kids as well. She is one of the most amazing women I have ever met!
