Cow has accompanied 10 year 4-Her all 10 years

DSC_0661Jacob Gongwer showed “Sparkie” as a young calf his very first year of 4-H, the summer of 2005. It just turned out well to show her every summer since then too.

“We never really planned on showing her every year; it just worked out that way,” Gongwer said.

Gongwer is finishing his 10th year in 4-H. He was in Elkhart County’s Guernsey club all 10 years and in Junior Leaders several years too.

DSC_0658“Sparkie” did “okay” in the showring, Gongwer said. She was always easy to show, though. She knows her name, so when he would go into the pasture, he could call her and she’d turn her head towards him, he said. After nine years of going to the Elkhart County 4-H Fair, she also didn’t need a lot of review of how to lead for the show this year. Gongwer said the first time he put a halter on her this year was the day before they brought her to the fair.

Gongwer graduated from Jimtown High School this past spring and will attend Southwestern Michigan College in Dowagiac to study precise machining. He is the son of Steve and Judi Gongwer.
